A Journey Rooted in Purpose: My Reflections on the EMWWAA Award

By Dr. Parul Sood

When I arrived in the UK in 2005, I could never have imagined that my journey—from a general dentist qualified from Amritsar, Punjab, then qualifying as a dentist in UK through conversion examination, training in Inverness,Scotland, to making Wales my home—would be recognised through the Ethnic Minority Welsh Women Achievement Association (EMWWAA) award. It is truly an honour that has left me both humbled and energised.

Today, I proudly run three NHS dental practices in South Wales, including two practices in Aberdare and one in Cardiff. I also train UK qualified foundation dentists, overseas-qualified dentists, and dental therapists and nurses—building future capacity in a profession that is in urgent need of support. My motivation has always been simple: to provide ethical, accessible dental care where it’s most needed, and to give back to the communities that welcomed me. I have two beautiful daughters

Receiving EMWWAA award feels like a powerful affirmation—not just of my work, but of the value of representation. As a woman of Indian heritage, working in socially deprived areas, this recognition reinforces the importance of perseverance, integrity, and service in all that I do. It also shines a light on what’s possible for other ethnic minority women in Wales and beyond.

Beyond the profession, this award has deeply personal meaning. I’m a mother to two beautiful daughters, and I hope they see in me the strength of a woman who believes in empowerment, equality, and creating meaningful change. I want them and every young girl to know that their dreams are valid, and their voices matter.

The EMWWAA award is not the end of a journey, but a renewed commitment to do more: for my patients, my community, and for the many women who will walk this path after me.

It pushes me to continue my efforts in NHS reform, community outreach, and mentorship. I hope my story helps inspire others to lead with courage and compassion.

Together, we can build a more inclusive and healthier Wales.

Always be Honest to yourself, others will follow. Thank you.
